| The Weduwa cloister is a monastery of the Theravada tradition on the south coast of Sri Lanka, only few minutes away from the beach and the sea. The clean compound is built around the Kogalla lake. With the view on bluish gray lake you can meditate fantastically. There is very peaceful atmosphere in the air. Approx. 20 monks - from young to old - live in this monastery. Here the possibility is offered to experience a very authentic stay in a Buddhist monastery with the forest monks of Sri Lanka. The Weduwa monastery is suited for people who have been already engaged with Buddhism and meditation and to whom heat and mosquitoes do not matter! |

Taking in guests At the moment the cloister offers only men the possibility of an overnight stay.
Lodging & catering The guest Kutis (Single Kutis) are built anew very idyllic all around the lake. They are simply and suitably furnished and have a connected bath. The catering in the monastery consists of vegetarian Rice & Currys typical for the country. As is it is the usual rule in a Buddhist monastery there are two meals: Breakfast and lunch. For evening there is tea.
Guest care The forest monks are happy about European guests and take them into their midsta with pleasure. In Sri Lanka the Theravada Buddhism rules, i.e. the monks strive for their own personal liberation and are rather introverted. However, some of the monks speak English and help on inquiry with the meditation and spiritual questions. Vipassana (Insight meditation) is one of the oldest meditation methods of India and was taught there more than 2500 years ago as a remedy against illnesses as well as as an art of life. Vipassana means to see things how they really are. Vipassana is simple, universal and a method of the self-cleaning through introspection. Through the observation of your own breath, of the physical and mental sensations, you recognize with time the entanglements and tensions of the mind. To recognize these and life as a constant flux of change leads to more freedom and clarity.
Timetable of the monks • 4:00 Wake up • 5:00 Chanting • 6:00 Cleaning Kuti • 6:30 Breakfast • 7:30 Meditation • 10:00 Begging rounds (only for monks) • 11:00 Lunch • 12:00 Chanting • 12:30 Lunch Rest • 13:00 Meditation • 17:00 Work Meditation • 18:00 Chanting • 19:30 Tea • 20:00 Meditation, discussions • 22:00 Sleep
The recommended timetable structures the day and gives you a frame for orientation. If possible you should try to keep to it. However, you can also retreat any time into your Kuti or leave the monastery to go to the village or to the beach. Please, decide for yourself to what extent yout want to take part in the daily routine of the monks!
