Cloister de Cura

The significant Franciscan monastery "Monastery Nostra Senyora de Cura " is on the mesa Puig de Randa in the island center of Majorca. With its 543 meters the Puig de Randa does not belong to the highest mountains on Majorca, but the mesa rising from the lowland takes a central position. It offers to the way-searching orientation and the conqueror it recompenses with a magnificent view over half the island, in the direction of north-east to the Tramuntana mountains and in southern direction to Majorca offshore island Cabrera.

Cura

The mountain road which leads to the "three monastery mountain" passes at first a desolate hermitage from the 15th century. The hermitage is made like a swallow's nest in the cliff. Good one kilometer far up lays the monastery Sant Honorat which is still inhabited by monks. Then completely on top at the summit there lays the monastery Nostra Senyora de Cura from which terrace you have a spectacular view over the whole plain. Only the radar station from the Franco time not far from the monastery clouds the view a little. De Cura is culturally-historically the most significant of the three monasteries on the monastic mountain and is run by the Franciscan laypersons order.

History of the monastery

Still today on Majorca as a genius honored scholar Ramon Llull (1235-1315) withdrew in the 13th century as the first hermit here, after he had given up his hedonistic life. He is the forefather of the Catalan and has in more than 250 works written by him formed this Romanesque language till today's time. Ramón Llull was sentenced to death because of heresy, but was never executed because he succeeded in escaping. He died as a result of a mission to Tunisia; but was buried on his island, on Majorca and has been beatified by the Vatican in the meantime on the way of his veneration of the saints. Formed by this the Franciscan's monastery is a significant place of pilgrimage for the Mallorquinans. It was established in the 13th century on the hermitage and in the Randa Mountain you still find beds carved in the rock from this time.

Taking in guests

For pilgrims and retreat guests there are well refurbished single and double rooms. The small monastery chapel invites for devotion and contemplation. After previous inquiry it is also possible to take part in the Francisiscan life of the order people (Franciscan-Tertiars). The order people also run a small monastery shop where the guests can acquire devotional objects, books, guides, traveling cards and other. Every Sunday at 12:00 o'clock a mass is held in the church.

Lodging and catering

You live in simple, comfortable rooms with connected WC/SHOWER. The rooms were still completely redeveloped few years ago. The overnight stays contain breakfast, otherwise self catering exists! In the inner courtyard of the monastery there is a good and not overpriced restaurant. A little below the monastery is a rustic stone-seat group under ancient, shade-donating trees where you can also have a nice picnic.

By the way: Already since centuries doctors state that the climate on the top of the mountain is very beneficial for person with lung illnesses and rheuma!
