From this plateau you have a magnificent panorama all over Majorca. Immediately opposite lies the Santuarien Mountain with its legendary fortress ruins. With the rental car you are in approx. 30 minutes by the sea and have several of the most beautiful Majorcan bath bays around Portocolom as your choice!

SanSalvador

History of San Salvador

The monastery was founded 1348 and is the most important place of pilgrimage of the Mallorquins after the monastery of Lluc. It is dedicated to the memory of the victims of the "black plague" as well as the redemption of this evil which in that year possibly wiped out half of the inhabitant of Felanitx.

The church, already built in the next year, was donated to Christ and the "passion of the picture"; a devotion that was quite widely common.

At the beginning of 16 century a new church was built which was enlarged till 1715 again to be able to accomodate the rising number of the religious population from the steadily rising small town of Felanitx. From 1885 to 1992 the monastery was managed by the brotherhood of the hermits of San Pablo and San Antonio.

Places of interest

The church from the year 1617 presents itself as a plain building with a Madonna's statue from the 13th century and a Gothic Retabel of alabaster. This only stone cutting edge work of the island comes from the school of Guilem Sagrera (around 1553) and shows "the passion of the picture ".

Here in the forecourt a representation of the Communion is found, in form of the simulation of a relief of the Mirador (portal of the cathedral of Palma). Above the portal to the court there is a wonderful picture of the Madonna whose origin is unclear.

A small chapel is up half way to the mountain from the year 1910 which is dedicated to the discovery of the portrait of virgin Maria which is also in the church today.

The Esplanade before the monastery is built with a Christ king monument of 37m height in whose crypt is a chapel which invites in a special way to devotion and meditation.

Lodging and catering

Since 1992 no more monks live in the monastery. Now the nice complex is administered by two Majorcan families in an informal way. In each case on Sundays and holidays a mass is read at 17.00 o'clock in the church.

In spring 2008 the guest-rooms of the monastery were completely redeveloped - it developed from the simple cells to a comfortable monastery hotel! Now 20 guestrooms and 2 flatlets accommodate with all necesseties. Arched ceilings, natural stone walls and warm colors provide a warm and cozy ambience. In addition on the monastery area are now a restaurant (nice breakfast buffet!) and a café.
