In the fascinating mountain world of the Rhodopen lies the contemplative monastery of Bachkovo. Although it is the second largest monastery of Bulgaria and a popular destination, it has retained its contemplative aura. The coarse stone pavement of the monastic yard is broken through by grassy areas, flowers and shade giving old trees. The monastic well offers fresh ground water for refreshment. The monastery is surrounded by wonderful nature that invites for walks and wanderings.

Taking in guests

In the Bachkovo monastery eight monks live nowadays. The guests are warmly invited to take part in the services in the church. The Matutin takes place approx. 7:30 o'clock, the vespers at 18:00 o'clock. The monastery gate closes in the evening at 21:00 o'clock. Women and men can be accomodated in the guest tract of the monastery.

The monks in Bachkovo are friendly and provided that there are no linguistic barriers also open for conversations. The guest brother speaks English and is available for questions.

Lodging and catering

The lodging occurs in newly renovated, very pleasant double rooms that can also be used as a single room. The complex is very beautiful and clean. In spite of the daily tourists the monastery is an oasis of peace.

At the moment the catering is not possible in the monastery. However, several good and inexpensive restaurants have settled around the monastery. Here one can enjoy the good Bulgarian kitchen. In the monastery yard there is a well with fresh drinkable source water.

Vaccination regulations: No vaccinations are prescribed. Please take your European health insurance card (EHIC, available at your German health insurance). We recommend the completion of an additional health insurance for a journey abroad.
